Breastfeeding Tips for New Moms

Breastfeeding Tips for New Moms

We hope you've decided to at least try breastfeeding. Even if you only nurse your baby for a few days or weeks, that early milk, called colostrum, provides an important source of antibodies to protect against disease as Baby's own immune system develops during the first year.

But did you know that breastfeeding benefits you, too?

  • It helps your uterus return to its pre-pregnancy size and reduces post-delivery bleeding.
  • It makes it easier to lose those pregnancy pounds (you burn up to 500 extra calories a day nursing).
  • It may reduce your risk of postpartum depression and breast and ovarian cancer.
  • It can delay the return of your period (although you should still use some form of birth control when you resume intercourse).
  • It saves money (no formula!).

Breastfeeding is a learned process; none of us (not even Baby) are born knowing how to do it. To improve your chance of success:

  • Try to breastfeed within the first hour of birth. This helps your uterus contract and provides that valuable colostrum. Also ask to have Baby room in with you at the hospital so you can feed on demand.

  • Have a nurse or lactation consultant check how Baby latches on while you're still in the hospital. While it might be uncomfortable when Baby latches on, it shouldn't be painful. If it hurts badly enough to make you grimace every time, then you may not have the right position.

  • Prepare for your milk to come in. This occurs on about the third or fourth day after birth. You'll know it's happened because your breasts suddenly increase several cup sizes! Speaking of which, make sure you have several well-fitting nursing bras, and don't forget to pack one in your hospital bag.

  • Plan to breastfeed about eight to 12 times in every 24-hour period. Your baby is good at giving hunger signals: rooting around searching for your nipple; putting his hand in his mouth; and looking increasingly alert. Always feed on demand.

  • Try not to introduce a bottle or other nipples, including pacifiers, until breastfeeding is well established. The thrusting motion required to nurse is different from that required to suck a nipple, and Baby could get confused.

  • Stay hydrated to ensure your body can make enough milk. A good idea is to sip from a glass of water when nursing.

  • Nurse in a calm environment to help your milk let down. After a while, all it will take for your milk to let down is unhooking your bra for your baby, or even just hearing any infant cry.

Common Breastfeeding Challenges

Here are the most common breastfeeding-related problems and how you can avoid them:

  1. Sore and cracked nipples. Check the position of the baby when she latches on; smooth lanolin over your nipples after each nursing session; and let your nipples air dry after each nursing session. Also, alternate which breast you start on for each session. Put a safety pin or plastic bracelet on your wrist on the side of your bra that was just used to help you remember. And limit nursing to 5 to 10 minutes on each side initially until your nipples toughen up (just a few days). You should also not hear any clicking or sucking sound. If you do, the baby isn't positioned right. Bring Baby closer to you, and hold his head firmly so his mouth covers as much of the areola as possible.

  2. Engorgement (overly full breasts) or blocked milk duct. Warm compresses, letting warm water run over your breasts in the shower, or laying cabbage leaves on your breasts can help relieve some of the pressure. You can also try pumping some milk between feedings.

  3. Mastitis or breast infection. If you feel like you have the flu and one breast is red, hot and sore, you probably have mastitis. You'll likely need an antibiotic to clear up the infection. In the meantime, keep nursing and/or pumping on that side as much as you can, even though it hurts. To prevent mastitis, make sure you empty your breasts regularly. If you do take antibiotics, add a probiotic (good bacteria such as lactobacillus) supplement, or eat a container of live culture yogurt every day, to help prevent the next complication: thrush.

  4. Thrush. Thrush is a fungal infection that can form on the breast and be passed between your breast and the baby's mouth. Overly moist breasts, sore or cracked nipples, following a diet high in sugar or yeasty foods or taking antibiotics, birth control pills or steroids can all throw your body's natural yeast levels out of control and lead to thrush. Symptoms are very sore nipples, achy or painful breasts or pink, flaky, shiny, itchy or cracked nipples.

Your baby may have little white spots in her mouth, or a diaper rash that won't heal. You will need to treat both your breasts and the baby's mouth with a prescription antifungal or with the over-the-counter antifungal gentian violet. To prevent thrush, air-dry your nipples, use nipple pads in your bra, wear a clean bra every day, and reduce the amount of sugar and yeasty products in your diet.

Increasing Milk Supply

Breastfeeding is a basic supply-and-demand activity. The more you nurse, the more milk your body makes. So when your baby goes through a growth spurt and seems to be nursing all the time, keep in mind she's signaling your body to up the milk production for her new nutritional needs.

NATURAL COSMETICS

The natural ingredients of the nipple cream care for and soothe the sensitive and strained nipples. And the best part: Mamacare nipple cream does not need to be removed before you nurse again since the composition of the cream is completely harmless for the baby.

How to Identify If Your Baby Has Sensitive Skin?

How to Identify If Your Baby Has Sensitive Skin?

Most infants have very delicate skin but you may find that your baby’s skin seems to be extra sensitive. Here are some tips for identifying and treating sensitive skin

How Do I Treat Sensitive Skin?

Q: How do I know if my baby has sensitive skin?

A: If your baby gets recurrent rashes and dry skin, you may need to take extra precautions to keep their delicate skin healthy. Babes with sensitive skin can be irritated by certain soaps, lotions, detergents, frequent bathing and temperature changes. If your baby’s skin reacts to any of these, they likely have sensitive skin.
There are many types of skin irritations that your baby may experience. Here are a few of the most common and what you can do to treat them. Make sure to see your child’s pediatrician if symptoms don’t improve or get worse.

Diaper Rash
If the area around your baby’s bottom is red, they may have a diaper rash. Diaper rashes occur when a diaper is too tight, a wet diaper has been left on for too long or a particular brand of diaper or baby wipe has irritated the skin. Treat it by cleaning the area with water and a washcloth, pat your baby’s bum dry and apply diaper rash cream.

Eczema
An itchy, red rash that appears on Baby’s face, elbow, chest, arms or behind the knees may be eczema and can be triggered by environmental irritants (such as pollen or cigarette smoke), or allergens in your child’s diet. Current medical opinion recommends daily baths for eczema-prone babies, but make sure to use soap and shampoo at the end so your wee one isn’t sitting in soapy water.

Heat Rash
Small, pinkish-red bumps that appear in sweat-prone areas like the neck, diaper area and armpits indicate your baby may have heat rash. Humid weather is the culprit for this skin irritation, but it can happen in winter too if your baby is over-bundled. Cool your baby off by removing his or her clothing, apply a cool, wet cloth to the affected areas and let your baby air-dry. Do not rub your babe’s skin with a towel or use ointments or moisturizing creams, which can make heat rash worse. Make sure to keep your little one cool, and see a doctor if the rash doesn’t get better.

    Why Do Babies Like Teethers?

    Why Do Babies Like Teethers?

Babies like to put toys in their mouth. Why do babies like to bite, munch and chew on teethers?

Teething is a process that many parents wait anxiously for but dread when it comes to their baby's development. Anywhere from the first few months of age, through the first year, babies could be teething. Many parents believe their babies are teething when they start to drool. As parents search the child's mouth for their first teeth to pop up from their gums, they begin to look for teething toys that a child can safely put in their mouth to bite and munch on, too.

Some parents prefer using teethers that can be chilled in the fridge, providing a soothing coolness to baby's gums if the child puts it in their mouth. Be careful not to freeze the teether too much, otherwise it could hurt a baby's delicate gums. Some teethers have vibration when a baby bites down on the toy.

There are many other reasons though why babies like to put teether toys in their mouth to chew on. It is not always for relief when their teeth are emerging. It is part of child development that babies will try to put things into their mouth at an early age. All that mouthing and munching actually encourages a baby to move their tongue around.

This gives them awareness of their mouth. These motions help to lay the foundation for learning speech sounds and babbling as babies learn to say their first sounds and words, "mamama" and "dadada" and "bababa." Since babies love to chew on things, especially when they are teething, parents should not be surprised if they use blankets, favorite stuffed toys, edges of baby books, keys, their fingers, or even their parents' fingers!

Teethers are made from all types of materials. Some are made from rubber, silicone, plastic or wood and come in various shapes, colors and sizes. Many toys have multiple textures on them, because companies know that some babies might like something different. Many teethers are round and easy for a baby to grip and hold before they bring it to their mouth.

Always supervise a baby when they are using a teether. While choosing a teether, look for a teether that the baby will be able to hold and safely put in their mouth. A teether that is to big or too small, could be a safety hazard. Do not use items that are not meant to be teethers as a toy, especially toys that have small parts that could fall off and be a choking hazard.

An important thing to keep in mind while choosing a teether is to verify that it is safe for baby to put into the mouth. Choose only phthalate and BPA free teethers for your child. Choose teethers with non toxic paint on them.

    Age-By-Age Guide To Strollers

    Age-By-Age Guide To Strollers

    0-6 months

What you’ll need: At this point, your main concern is keeping baby stable, supported and comfortable. So look for a sturdy, structured stroller that has a good suspension system that can absorb bounces and prevent jostling. Another must-have feature: a comfy seat that fully reclines, so your newborn can lie flat on his back.

What you’ll want: A travel system or a stroller that accommodates an infant car seat, so you don’t have to wake baby every time you take him in and out of the car. Some moms opt for an inexpensive stroller frame at this age, which the car seat snaps right into. And then they get a pricier full-sized stroller once baby can sit up on his own.

Also consider: If you’re a city mom, or you just don’t drive much, instead of a travel system, get a stroller with a bassinet attachment. Simply lay your bundle of joy down and go. No attachments, adaptors or snaps to finagle with – something you’ll appreciate in the early sleep-deprived, new-mom days. The bassinet can also double as a mini crib.

    6-12 months

What you’ll need: Now that baby is sitting upright, your stroller’s seat is more important than ever. It should be roomy, with plenty of support and cushioning; adjustable; and offer multiple recline positions to keep up with your growing child. Also make sure it comes with a five-point harness to keep your little one snug and secure while you’re strolling.

What you’ll want: You’re getting the hang of this mom thing and are feeling more confident taking baby out and about. Strolling is a perfect chance to chat (read: bond!) with her, especially when she can see your face. One often-overlooked feature that will come in handy now: a seat that faces forward and backward.

Also consider: Now’s the time you might start thinking buying a specialty stroller to compliment your original one – once baby has good head and neck control, of course. To figure out which kind is right for you, think about your lifestyle: Are you an avid runner who wants to exercise with baby? Look for a lightweight jogging stroller that handles sidewalks and trails. Are you a mom on the go? Consider picking up an ultra-portable umbrella stroller that’s easy to stash in the trunk.

    18-24 months

What you’ll need: Your kid is becoming more independent – and curious – and wants to soak in the world around him. This may mean a lot of hopping out of the stroller – and means you’ll be carrying it – so look for a lightweight model with a quick and simple fold. (If you have to choose one over the other, go with the one that folds easily.) At this age, it should still have a five-point harness to keep your wiggly explorer secure, and check for potential pinch points where the canopy opens and closes. That’s a popular spot for kids to rest their hands when they’re walking, and you don’t want your toddler to get hurt.

What you’ll want: A set of wheels that’s a cinch to navigate – and here’s why. While your toddler is walking, while holding your hand, (or wants to be carried), you’ll need to steer the stroller with the other hand. That’s not easy to do with every stroller.

Also consider: A ride-on board can be a godsend on those days when your child wants to be a big kid and walk instead of being wheeled around. And when she starts complaining about tired tootsies after a few blocks, she can just hop on the board. Crisis averted.

    At Every Age

Whether your baby is two days or two years old, there are a few perks that are extra important.

Sun protection. In a pinch, you can use a blanket to shield your newborn from the sun. But as she gets older – and becomes more active – you’ll be grateful for a stroller with a big canopy. Some newer models even come with ones that are UV protective.

Storage space. How much you need is a matter of preference and lifestyle. Are you the kind of mom who likes to take everything but the kitchen sink with you when you leave the house, or do you travel light? Do you do your grocery shopping on foot or in a car? Would you rather stow your diaper bag or carry it?

Adjustable handlebar. Let’s say you’re 5’4”, and your partner is 6’2”. Can you both comfortably stroll your little one? Consider who’ll be doing the pushing, then make sure the handlebar can be moved to accommodate everyone’s height and leg span.

Car Seat Safety Tips for Baby and Child

Car Seat Safety Tips for Baby and Child

Babies are at greater risk of injury in crashes. This is because babies' spines are developing and their heads are large for their bodies. In a crash, if your child is riding forward-facing, her spinal cord may stretch, which could result in serious injury or death. However, when your baby rides rear-facing in a child safety seat, her upper body — head, neck and spine — is cradled by the back of the child safety seat in the case of a frontal crash, which is the most common type of crash.

According to research studies, children up to 2 years of age who are placed in forward-facing child safety seats are significantly more likely to be seriously injured in a crash than same age children who are in rear-facing child safety seats.

The following are some important child safety seat tips for your baby:

    • Your baby should remain rear-facing until she is 2 years of age or until she reaches the highest weight or height limit allowed by the manufacturer of her child safety seat. Some rear-facing child safety seats can accommodate children up to 35 pounds or more. Don't be concerned if your child's legs bend at the knees or touch the back seat of the car when rear-facing; this will not harm her feet or knees.
    • Always put your infant in a rear-facing child safety seat in the back of your car. A baby riding in the front seat can be fatally injured by a passenger side air bag.
    • The shoulder straps must be at or below your baby’s shoulders. Child safety seats have several pairs of harness slots so you can adjust the harness as your baby grows. Make sure you use the harness correctly by following these tips:
      • The harness must be snug so you cannot pinch a fold in the harness material after buckling in your baby.
      • The straps should lie flat in a straight line without sagging or twisting.
      • The top of the chest clip should be positioned at armpit level.
    • Never put a blanket between your child and the harness straps, or underneath or behind her. For car travel, don't dress your infant in bulky outerwear; it can interfere with the tightness of the harness. Instead, place a warm blanket over your child and harness.
    • Your baby is getting too big for his rear-facing child safety seat when his head nears the top of the seat. There should be at least one inch between the top of your child’s head and the top of the rear-facing child safety seat.

How to Choose the Best Baby Bib for Your Child?

How to Choose the Best Baby Bib for Your Child?

As a parent, you will quickly discover that meal times are messy. It is surprising how little of each meal actually ends up in your baby’s mouth. Baby bibs are a fantastic solution to keeping food off your little ones clothes (and everywhere else) during meal time.

Baby bibs come in all manner of different sizes, shapes and materials. How do you determine which bib is right for your baby?

1.Why your baby needs a bib

If there is one thing baby’s love to do at meal time, it’s make a mess. That baby food may taste yummy but it is much more fun to smear it all over the high chair, clothes and floor.

Chances are that your washing cycle has become much more frequent now you have a baby in the house. While bibs wont prevent mess, a bib does provide a layer of protection between your baby’s meal and the clothes which they are wearing. Rather than constantly washing baby food coated clothes, you simply clean the bib instead.

2.The different types of baby bibs

    I)Feeding Bibs

As the name suggests, feeding bibs are placed around your baby’s neck during feeding time. Since feeding a baby can be a messy process, feeding bibs are quite large to protect as much of your infants clothes from food as possible.

Some feeding bibs even come with a pocket to catch any food that falls from your baby’s mouth, not only protecting your baby’s clothes from mess, but also the floor as well.

    II)Drool Bibs

Drool bibs are much smaller than feeding bibs. The smaller size allows your little baby to roam with out the fear of being tangled up in a larger feeding bib.

Drool bibs are designed to prevent small amounts of baby dribble from sliding down your baby’s front in and soaking into his clothes.

3.What to look for when comparing baby bibs

    1. The ability to fold up
    2. Ease of cleaning
    3. The Fit
    4. Comfort
    5. Style

    Make My Day Baby Bibs

Make My Day are based in the US, and have a gorgeous, fun selection of weaning bibs, which can be purchased via Cheeky Rascals in the UK. There are 16 designs to choose from.Made from 100% food-grade BPA free silicone, the bibs are super soft, stain resistant and dishwasher safe (which is always a bonus in my books!) They clean up beautifully, and are ideal for every day use.

The bib has adjustable straps, which means it will fit from around 6 months until approximately 3 years. It seems very comfortable, and gives a great amount of coverage. It also folds up perfectly to pop in the changing bag for eating out!

    Breast Pump Facts

    Breast Pump Facts

Every breastfeeding mom has a unique experience. Some moms find breastfeeding easy and uncomplicated, while others may find it more challenging. No matter what the experience, all moms breastfeed better with the support of family, friends, and often with the help of a good breast pump.

Different moms have different needs, so Medela makes a variety of breast pumps. While manual breast pumps are great for moms who spend most of their days and nights with their babies, electric breast pumps are the better choice for moms who are frequently separated from the babies because of work or health problems.

    1. Hospital-Grade pumps: Recommended if mom is unable to nurse at all due to medical reasons. These pumps are designed to help build and maintain milk supply and are available on a rental basis from hospitals, lactation consultants, or medical equipment rental stores.
    2. Daily use double pumps: Recommended if mom is employed full-time or needs to pump every few hours.
    3. Occasional use single or double pumps: Recommended if mom needs to pump just once or twice per day, or a few times per week.

    Freestyle® Breastpump Deluxe Set

Freestyle double electric breastpump with 2-Phase Expression® Technology features a rechargeable battery and lightweight motor, providing a mobile pumping experience to keep up with your busy lifestyle.  The backlit digital display, timer and memory button helps you personalize and control your pump sessions.

Freestyle Breastpump Deluxe Set offers the convenience of an

all-in-one mobile and portable solution.  Building from the foundation of the starter set, the deluxe set includes the addition of Medela’s portable breast pump carry bag, cooler set and 2 additional bottles, everything you need for on-the-go pumping.

    Explore Breast Pumps

Why are Medela pumps different? Because Medela breast pumps have the original 2-Phase Expression® technology which, using the one-touch let down button, has been shown to produce more milk in less time.*

    • Medela is the only company to provide proven, research-based pump technology that mimics a baby’s natural nursing pattern.
    • Through research, Medela learned that there are two distinct phases of how babies breastfeed.
      • Stimulation phase – when babies first go to breast, they suck faster to start milk flowing.
      • Expression phase – after milk flow or “let down” starts, babies breastfeed with a slower deep suck to remove milk.
    • The original 2-Phase Expression technology can only be found in Medela breast pumps.
    • Medela offers a wide range of breastshield sizes. Using the right breastshield size is important to:
      • Ensure proper suction
      • Experience optimal milk removal.
      • Achieve maximum pumping comfort.

As a mom that looks for new innovative products to use and always seeking products that can be used for more than just one purpose or period of time. With that being said, that one sentence was enough to convince to try the New Bumbo Multi Seat. If that statement didn’t convince you too and it will explain Why You Need a Bumbo Multi Seat for your growing baby!

You may already be familiar with the original Bumbo floor seat which is intended for your baby once they can support their own head. The new Bumbo Multi Seat is recommended for ages 5 months – 3 years of age and can be seen as a step up from the original.

The Bumbo Multi Seat can be used as a floor seat (much like the original Bumbo), a feeding seat, and a booster seat. The foam insert is even removable so your child can still use the actual chair as they grow! You will be happy to know that when you want to use it as a feeding seat there is no additional items to purchase. The seat already comes with the removable tray that is stored in the back of the seat providing the ultimate convenience.

    The Bumbo Multi Seat features:

    • Base adjusts to accommodate children at different stages
    • Includes a 3-point harness
    • Wide stable base has full contact with floor
    • One-handed tray attachment
    • It is light-weight
    • Easy to clean surface (major plus in my book)
    • Does not take up much space

    Why Do Car Seats Expire?

    Why Do Car Seats Expire?

here are a number of reasons why car seats expire, but the most important of which is to keep your child safe!

The main factor in car seat expiration is that materials degrade over time when exposed to extreme temperatures.  Also, evolving government regulations set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration and technological advances such as Britax's SafeCell technology can render older seats obsolete over time.

Britax car seats have a service life of anywhere from 6 to 10 years from the date of manufacture (not from when you bought it so make sure to check the serial label and read the instruction manual!).

When it's time to say so long to your child's trusty travel companion make sure when it's expired, it's retired! Sarah Tilton, Britax's Child Passenger Safety Advocate, suggests the following easy steps:

How to Retire an Expired Car Seat

    1. Cut off all the webbing and cut up the cover.
    2. Remove or blackout the serial number and the date it was manufactured.
    3. Write "EXPIRED DO NOT USE!" on the car seat shell and place on the curb for pickup.

Follow these steps and your little ones will be safe for years to come!
