Many parents have a love-hate relationship with pacifiers. Parents dread taking the pacifier away one day or having pacifiers discourage breastfeeding. Before you buy pacifiers for your baby, take a look at these common pacifier features and safety tips to be sure you're choosing the best ones for your baby.

When you're stocking baby's nursery, it's tempting to buy several boxes of those cute little pacifiers. Buying a few pacifiers in different styles is a good idea, wait until you know your baby will take a pacifier before buying too many. Some babies just don't like pacifiers. Others are particular about which pacifiers they will take. Try a few styles with baby before buying a year's supply. Add several styles to your baby registry so your baby has a sampler platter to choose from.

Orthodontic pacifier nipples have a rounded top and a flat bottom, and were designed to prevent tooth troubles later in baby's life. However, if your baby prefers a rounded traditional pacifier nipple, go with what works. Both types of pacifier nipples have been found to increase bite problems, like overbite, later in life, but limiting the amount of time baby spends with the pacifier and taking the pacifier away after baby's first year can minimize dental damage.

Silicone or Latex?

Both silicone and latex have advantages, and the choice usually comes down to baby's preference. Silicone is sturdy, doesn't retain odors, cleans up easily and is harder for baby to bite through. Silicone is not as soft on baby's mouth, though. Latex is soft in baby's mouth and baby may like the way it retains scents, but latex doesn't hold up as well to repeated cleanings and little teeth can quickly chew through it.

Must-Have Features

A safe pacifier should be at least 1.5 inches across to prevent choking. Anything smaller won't meet federal safety standards for choking hazards. The well-known brands in major stores are usually a safe bet for size. If you're browsing super-cheap pacifiers in a dollar store or other discount venue, it's a good idea to measure just in case.

Many babies develop rashes from the constant moisture under the pacifier shield. Pacifiers that have vent holes in the shield to let air get to baby's skin could help. The debate continues on whether homemade baby food is better than commercially produced food. Most moms have been in on the conversation at some point, whether or not they still have a 6- to 9-month-old.

Baby food in the jar is convenient and portable, but some parents worry about:

• Cost. It can be more expensive to buy baby food than to cook and mash fresh food yourself.
• Preservatives. “However, the only preservative in the jarred food we recommend is vitamin C,” notes Dr. Rifka.
• Processing. Excessive heat used to kill bacteria during food processing may also dull nutrients.
• Packaging. Disposable packaging isn’t as earth-friendly as reusable dishes.

For these and other reasons, some moms have opted to take the homemade route. They cook, mash and store fresh food themselves, which can be less expensive yet more time consuming. Other sour notes include:

• Safety. While processed food follows strict safety guidelines — on naturally occurring chemicals like nitrates, for example — homemade food doesn’t.
• Storage. Homemade food doesn’t keep as easily as jarred food. Parents need to beware of thawing food and refreezing leftovers due to bacteria growth.
• Texture. How lumpy is too lumpy? Food that isn’t mashed enough could be a choking hazard. And picky eaters may prefer the consistency of smoother processed food.

Which food is best?

According to Dr. Rifka, it’s up to you. The concerns aren’t dire enough to rule out either type of food. She recommends a combination — making homemade food for dining in and buying jar food for dining out, since unopened jar food doesn’t need to be refrigerated.

“The quality of processed baby food is no longer an issue,” she says. “There are high-quality, natural baby foods on store shelves now, and most well-known brands have good safety records. But if parents want to make homemade food, it’s fine as long as they do it safely.”

Do’s and don’ts for making homemade baby food

If you choose to make baby food yourself, follow these guidelines:

• Do steam or microwave fruits and vegetables (instead of boiling them) to retain most nutrients.
• Don’t add salt, sugar or any other ingredient. Each baby food item should have only one ingredient, so it’s easier to identify any potential allergic reaction.  
• Do mash or puree cooked food with small amounts of water until smooth.
• Do transfer food into ice cube trays and freeze. Then store frozen cubes in baggies.
• Don’t freeze food for more than one month.
• Do rewarm food to room temperature when it’s time to eat — but not before.

Healthy snacks for babies (and moms) on the go

No time for homemade? Busy parents can still feed their babies fresh foods that don’t come in a jar. Take one of these along on your next outing:

• Banana. Bring a little dish and a fork or spoon and mash it good.
• Avocado. Mash like a banana.
• Yogurt. But be sure to tote it with an ice pack.  
• Diced fruit. Peaches, pears and melons are great for babies with new teeth.
• Tiny cubes of cheese. Opt for pasteurized cheeses, like mozzarella or mild cheddar, because they are less likely to contain illness-causing bacteria.

Which detergent you buy for your baby's clothes will depend on personal preference, family history and any skin reactions after baby arrives. The special detergents that are "baby-specific" are usually scent-free and have fewer ingredients that would be likely to irritate delicate skin.

Scent-Free Laundry Detergents

A second category of laundry products to consider is scent-free detergents that are not baby-specific.

Eco-friendly and alternative detergents or soaps (such as soap nuts) also fall into this category. If you have trouble getting clothes clean with the special baby detergents, these types of detergents may be a better choice. These types of detergents are readily available today, and are generally available for all types of washing machines.

Homemade Laundry Soaps and Detergents

Many families now make their own laundry detergent or soap at home. This can easily be made at home and works for cloth diapers, baby clothes, plus everyone else's laundry. This is pretty easy to do and is really cheap to make, plus you can customize your own version with essential oils or some types of scented soaps if you like scented laundry. 

The low cost and convenience of one detergent is an advantage here, plus the effectiveness if you find a homemade detergent that works really well with your water and machine. However, you have to spend extra time making batches of the detergent versus just picking it up at the store.

You also have to find good ways to store the detergent, since powdered types need to be well sealed to keep out moisture and liquid detergents need to be easily pourable and possibly mixable since some separate between uses.

Your baby's primary teeth may be only a temporary tool for chomping, to be replaced during the early school years by his permanent pearls. But it's no less important to take good care of them now and to establish the habits that will lead him toward a lifetime of dental health. Decayed or lost baby teeth can interfere with good nutrition and speech development, and by not holding a proper place for permanent teeth, they can make the permanent ones come in crooked.

WHEN SHOULD I START BRUSHING MY BABY'S TEETH?

Tooth brushing can begin as soon as baby’s first tooth pokes through the gums. Use a clean, damp washcloth, a gauze pad, or a finger brush to gently wipe clean the first teeth and the front of the tongue, after meals and at bedtime. Toothbrushes — moistened with water and no more than a rice-grain size smear of fluoride toothpaste — can also be used, but they should be very soft and with no more than three rows of bristles (a pediatric dentist or your pharmacist can help you find the finger brushes and a proper baby toothbrush). Toss any toothbrushes that have become rough at the edges (or that are more than two to four months old, because nasty mouth bacteria can begin to build up).

WHAT TO DO IF YOUR BABY HATES TOOTH-BRUSHING TIME

Unfortunately, not every baby loves having her teeth cleaned—and when baby is teething and her gums are sore and tender, she might be especially resistant. Here’s what to try if tooth-brushing time becomes a struggle:

• Go easy: Baby’s gums are sensitive (even when she’s not teething), so if she really doesn’t seem to like the brush, try a soft washcloth and a gentle touch.
• Sing a song: For some babies, a little distraction is all it takes to make tooth-brushing palatable. Sing a favorite tune while cleaning baby’s teeth, or make up silly versions of standards (maybe “Old McDonald had a brush,” or “Mary had a little tooth”). Your little one may reward you with a tiny-toothed smile.
• Show her how it’s done: Seeing mom or dad brushing—and enjoying it—helps make a game out of tooth-brushing time. “Mom goes first...now your turn!”
• Let her play: Your baby will probably be curious about the toothbrush or finger brush. Encourage her interest by allowing her to hold the brush and examine it at her own pace. She may even end up putting the brush in her mouth, all on her own.
